Finding a language through art
JJ Tan is a Singaporean artist whose vivid paintings communicate a way of seeing that is distinctly his own. Living with autism has brought challenges, yet art has given him a direct and expressive language—one shaped by colour, close observation and persistence.
His interest in creativity began early. With encouragement from teachers and his family, that interest developed into a committed artistic practice and a growing body of floral paintings in acrylic on canvas.
Learning across borders
As a young adult, JJ moved from Singapore to Taiwan with the support of his mother and continued his studies at Kao Yuan University in Kaohsiung. Although language created an additional barrier, his professors and classmates recognised his artistic ability and supported his distinctive way of communicating.
That inclusive learning environment allowed JJ to demonstrate knowledge through art while developing greater confidence and independence.
An exhibition journey
After graduation, JJ presented work at cultural centres, galleries and public venues across Taiwan and Singapore. His exhibition history includes the Gangshan Cultural Art Centre, Howard Plaza Hotel Kaohsiung, The Arts House in Singapore and ION Art Gallery at ION Orchard.
His paintings have introduced audiences from different backgrounds to a world of luminous flowers and expressive colour. The journey continues to show what becomes possible when talent is met with patience, opportunity and steadfast support.
